Origin[]
Maken is the name given to the barmaid of the Blue Boar Inn in Howard Pyle's influential 1883 novel.
In Robin Hood[]
Maken was one of those present when Robin Hood was able to get the Tinker drunk and steal his warrant for Robin out of his pouch at the Inn. She laughed alongside her employer Eadom when Robin suggested that they make the man pay for the bill even though Robin had already done so ensuring that they made double what they were charging. When months later Will Stutely was captured by one of the Sheriff of Nottingham's constables at the Blue Boar she was the one who went running to the greenwood to tell Robin and his Merry Men what had befallen their fellow.
Alterations in Later Adaptations[]
The British television show from the 1950's The Adventures of Robin Hood renamed the the Blue Boar Inn's barmaid Joan and made her more integral to the story by having her and Little John be romantically interested in each other.
