As Maid Marian drifted further and further from her origin as a May Queen of the May Games and a shepherdess and became in many adaptations a noble lady she was afforded a personal servant or lady-in-waiting to be her ally and constant companion.

In at least one adaptation she gains her own outlaw beau in Much the Miller's Son to mirror her mistress's relationship with Robin Hood
