Origin[]
Will Scarlet has long been depicted in tales as getting married to a high spirited young woman, but just who that woman is has never been consistent.
In one surviving early telling of The bride's tale before Alan started to appear Will was made her usually unnamed fiance. In another, rather strange and much later ballad, Will married a princess after saving her life. Pierce Egan the Younger created the maid Maude Lindsay with whom Will fell in love and eventually married.
